In a heartwarming tale of age-defying adventure, Trudy, a spirited 103-year-old, recently checked off a remarkable item from her bucket list: flying high above the picturesque Yarra Valley in a hot air balloon. Accompanied by her fellow residents Noreen (93) and Anne (87), as well as the enthusiastic Lifestyle Services Coordinator Maureen, Trudy embarked on an unforgettable journey that defied expectations and celebrated the joy of living life to the fullest.

Trudy’s airborne adventure was nothing short of magical. From the attentive ground staff to the skilled pilot, Jacob, every detail was handled with care. The ladies were thrilled by the breathtaking flight and charmed by Jacob’s willingness to answer their every question. The winery staff added to the experience with their warm hospitality and delicious breakfast.
For Trudy, the experience was a long-held dream finally realized. “You only live once, and I have always wanted to do it,” she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Noreen echoed her sentiment, emphasizing the importance of seizing opportunities regardless of age. “You must give things a go at any age,” she declared. “I haven’t done it before, and it’s exciting and new!”
Anne shared her own nostalgic connection to hot air balloons, recounting how a balloon once landed near her childhood home in Box Hill. “A balloon landed just near my mother’s bungalow, so I have always wanted to go up in one,” she reminisced, her voice filled with nostalgia and anticipation.

In a world often defined by limitations and boundaries, the journey of Trudy and her fellow residents serves as a reminder that age is no barrier to exploration, joy, and the pursuit of dreams. For Lifestyle Services Coordinator Maureen, who orchestrated the outing as part of a larger initiative to fulfill her residents’ bucket list dreams, the experience holds special significance.
“After suffering a major cancer scare in 2011, I decided to get out there and try different things out of my comfort zone,” she explained. “I wanted to do the same for our residents—to empower them to pursue their dreams and live life to the fullest.”
So here’s to Trudy, Noreen, Anne, Maureen, and all those who refuse to let age define their dreams—may their stories inspire us to embrace every opportunity with open arms and unwavering determination. After all, as Trudy reminds us, “You only live once.”
