![My life as a balloonist has always been shaped by moments of serendipity. A phone call, an email, or a chance connection has often led to extraordinary aerial adventures that have taken my breath away.
This year, my moment of serendipity came in the form of an invitation to join a ballooning safari across southwest Africa. Led by Josep Llado and the incredible team from Ultra Magic Balloons, 65 balloonists from 13 countries came together with 16 balloons for an unforgettable 20-day, 4,000-kilometre journey through Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
It was a journey that awakened every sense. From sleeping beneath the big southern sky in my swag to standing among ancient baobabs in Chobe National Park, flying over the incredible Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, and traversing endless savannah plains, each day revealed a new landscape and a deeper appreciation for the people, wildlife and cultures we encountered along the way. It was an experience that opened my heart to the extraordinary beauty that exists in our world.
This, to me, is ballooning at its very best. To arrive in some of the world’s most spectacular places and experience them from above is a privilege I will never take for granted. Even after all these years, the wonder of floating quietly above unique landscapes has never diminished, and I hope it never will.
