Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the men who have shaped our lives, and for Eddie Saunders, this day holds a special place in his heart. As a hot air balloon pilot, Eddie’s journey is one that has been deeply influenced by his father, Kiff Saunders – a legend in the world of ballooning. Their shared passion for ballooning has created a bond like no other, with memories and lessons that have taken flight in the most literal sense.
Eddie’s earliest memories of ballooning with his father are a testament to the adventures they’ve shared. One particularly vivid memory stands out: the time they flew over stunning Lake Eyre. This was no ordinary flight; it was Kiff’s first time back in the basket after a serious motorcycle accident. The significance of this moment was not lost on Eddie. “This flight was with Australian Story and a number of close family and friends, tasked to fly over one of the most beautiful places in Australia and celebrate the life that Dad has led, his achievements in the world of ballooning, and getting back in the basket. It’s something I’ll never forget,” Eddie recalls.
Following in His Father’s Footsteps
For Eddie, the decision to follow in his father’s footsteps was not a single lightbulb moment, but more of a lifelong journey. Ballooning was always a part of his life, a natural extension of his relationship with his father. Yet, if there was one experience that solidified his path, it was seeing the awe-inspiring sight of balloons floating over Melbourne’s CBD. “I don’t think there is a greater job in the world than being able to fly the world’s oldest form of aviation over one of the greatest cities. It’s truly stunning,” Eddie shares.
And stunning it is. Melbourne is the only major city in the world where you can experience the magic of a hot air balloon flight over its vibrant CBD. Imagine the cityscape below, bathed in the golden hues of sunrise, as you float silently above it all. It’s no wonder that this unique perspective drew Eddie into the world of ballooning.
Lessons from a Legend
When it comes to ballooning, Kiff Saunders has passed down more than just technical skills to his son. Eddie credits his father with teaching him invaluable life lessons that extend far beyond the basket. “Dad taught me pretty much everything I know about ballooning – the good and the bad. He’s still struggling to teach me how to get out of bed on time, but he’s working on it,” Eddie jokes. But on a more serious note, he adds, “He has taught me so many wonderful life skills, like how to be a good friend, a good traveller, and most importantly, how to make a good instant coffee in the morning. I don’t know where I would be without him.”
One piece of advice from Kiff has particularly resonated with Eddie throughout his career: “Whistle while you work.” This simple yet profound mantra has helped Eddie navigate the highs and lows of ballooning, a profession that is as unpredictable as it is rewarding. “It’s really important to keep a smile on your face, take the good out of every situation, and continue to whistle while you work,” Eddie reflects.
A Father’s Day Tradition of Flight
While the Saunders family doesn’t have many rigid traditions, on a ballooning morning, they’ll meet over a morning coffee, have a bit of banter whilst watching the pibal (a small helium filled balloon used to help assess the wind speed and direction aloft), and work together to pull off stunning balloon flights. It’s a routine that, while simple, encapsulates the essence of their bond. “We don’t really have many Father’s Day traditions as often our whole family is in various parts of the world at different times,” Eddie says. But when they do come together, it’s these quiet moments that hold the most meaning for the family.
This Father’s Day, why not take a leaf out of Eddie and Kiff’s book and share an unforgettable experience with your own dad? A hot air balloon flight over the Yarra Valley offers the perfect blend of adventure and serenity, a chance to create memories that will last a lifetime. As you soar over the lush vineyards and rolling hills, you’ll understand why this experience is on so many bucket lists.
This year, give dad a gift that’s as special as your bond. There’s no better way to celebrate than by reaching new heights – together.
